The Wildcat mascot, famous for pummeling inflated gators at basketball games or standing at hte top of a cheerleader pyramid, was introduced to the UK faithful during the 1976-1977 academic year.
Gary Tanner was the original wildcat, and entertained thousands of UK fans at Commonwealth Stadium and Rupp Arena during athletic events. Today, the Wildcat Mascot attends academic and social functions as well, and serves as a friendly ambassador for the University. Around the turn of the 21st century, the Wildcat was joined by Scratch, a more kid-friendly mascot and host of UK's official Kid's Club. Also, Blue, the official UK Wildcat, makes his home at the Salato Wildlife Education Center near Frankfort, Kentucky.
