The University of Kentucky spent a lot of money to come up with a nice new logo for the wildcats in the early 1980s. The logo replaced the rather pathetic, cat-ish animal with a Kentucky Stocking cap (an image that still hung around on paper cups in the student center in the early 1990s). Now we have the Wildcat stretching out a great paw over the letters U and K. But it isn't what it used to be.
Unfortunately, a few people with way too much time on their hands and over-active imaginations saw something "obscene" in the logo. In the early 1990s, they raised a loud noise about it and demanded it be changed. Eventually, they raised such a ruckus that the University gave in and modified the logo. One has to wonder why conservative Southern Baptists were the only ones who thought that the Wildcat's tongue looked like phallic. What do you think they had on their minds? Old Logo |
New Logo | Yeah, I know. Once I saw it in that context, it kind of ruined it for me, too. |
